A journey into the Middle Ages to discover the myths and popular legends which have been handed down until today. Tales of alchemists monks and legends about mysterious creatures or old treasure hunters. The myth of an ‘Old inhuman guardian of the Cave. These are the protagonists of many interesting stories from an anthropological perspective, which imparts an aurea of mystery to Gratteri, one of the most ancient Madonie’s villages. The ideal place in which a tale can become a living presence and pure open-air theatre by crossing suggestive streets and night glimpse of the town centre. From ‘quartiere dei Saraceni’, with its typical round houses on the rocks, to the old ancient market of the old ‘Bucciria’. From the neighborhood of Porta Grande, close to the river, to the foot of the tower ‘of Orologio’ without missing the breathtaking view from Bocca dell’Inferno (the Hell’s mouth) and feeling goosebumps by listening to the tale about an imaginary creature as known as Macigna, the way the local inhabitants used to call it…
And we are going to tell you the story of the ancient castle of Qratis, from the Byzantine era, in which the bishop of Cefalu had been held by Ventimiglia Princes, eventually dying in the gutter. Morover, we are going to tell you the triumphal entrance of Aldoino Ventimiglia in 1337 that moved to the Madonite stronghold the last inhabitants of the ancient fortress of Brucato, destroyed during the war between the Angevins and Aragonese. Among the many legends also the ones linked to the Holy Grail, the treasure hidden and sought in the past by unusual foreigners among the remains of a Norman abbey in the woods, half an hour’s walk from the village. An original story emphasized by the popular suggestion, which would certainly have nothing to envy to the most fascinating pages of a famous medieval novel. With the help of the last written and oral sources received, we will then explore the history and legends that would make Gratteri the most mysterious village of the Madonie.
On the trails of the Holy Grail: the story and legends of the medieval Gratteri.
